Material thinking

2022

This project explored the process of experimentation through material research. In the first phase, each student selected one material to investigate — I chose seashells. I began by collecting, sorting, and crushing them, then experimented with turning the powder back into a solid form. Many of the experiments focused on color variations and the visual qualities that emerged through sorting and processing.

In the second phase, I explored possible new applications for the material. I experimented with 3D printing using a mixture of shell powder, cornstarch, and water, which resulted in a clay-like substance. The printed form turned out much larger than expected, leading me to develop a simplified version — a playful, hands-on tool that allows users to create their own shapes and drawings by hand.
